ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Papermaking is yet another step in my evolution as an artist. Since my retirement from a 30 year career teaching art in the public school, it has been my goal to assume the role of student.  Upon attending a inspiring exhibit of very  talented Papermakers, I was eager to learn this exciting and varied process.  Winnie Radolan was happy to teach me.

Within the first two  papermaking classes with Winnie, I was in love with the molds, deckles, pulp and the endless possibilities they afforded me. Although papermaking is very different than any other artistic materials I’ve explored, I find that my knowledge of clay, collage and sewing all lend themselves beautifully to this new-to-me process.

I enjoy working in relief, layering, rippling, folding, ruffling and sculpting the wet pulp while it sits (and dries) on Plexiglas. The organic qualities of the wet pulp often lead me to create abstract collages that are suggestive oceans, gardens and sea life. As my collages progress, I often add various papers, thread, seeds, ribbon, embroidery, beads and watercolor pencil. Each enhances the luscious tactile quality of the handmade paper.
