JOAN KOPCHIK

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Handmade Paper/Mixed Media Constructions.

For the past twenty-five plus years, I have been creating mixed media works of art using handmade paper as my primary media. I also have a strong background in drawing and have won numerous awards in that area. I have worked as a calligrapher and bookbinder.

My major focus is process. I try to take what inspires me either from the natural world or from my travels and interest in other cultures and develop a work of art from my awareness and responses to my experiences. My own philosophy is to be aware of my surroundings and my interest is to produce art that is beautifully crafted and well grounded technically so that the framework and materials used are sound.

I use both internal pigmentation of the paper and surface painting techniques. I begin with a clay form and then make a plaster mold, into which I cast freshly made sheet paper. When enough layers are cast and the paper becomes dry, I remove it from the plaster mold and surface paint the image.  I include natural objects, river stone and shale, reed, bamboo skewers, recycled materials and metal findings. I like to contrast paper, which is soft, into a substance that mimics stone, marble, or metal, hard materials.
